Klar masteruppsats

Abstract. Research on statement analysis has focused on witnesses and plaintiffs with participants lacking criminal experience. Few studies have examined how Criteria-Based Content Analysis (CBCA) and Reality Monitoring (RM) function on suspects’ and offenders’ accounts. This experiment examined if CBCA and/or RM could differentiate offenders’ (n = 30) true and false confessions. Results showed that CBCA differentiated statements in the non-predicted direction: higher total scores in false than in true confessions. Hence, the offenders told very convincing lies. There were no effects of police interview experience; however, unexpected effects of gender. RM did not differentiate statements. The surprising results show the importance of carrying out more research on statement analysis of accounts by criminally experienced participants.
